Why onboarding matters

Getting context on who is using your agent is typically the biggest driver towards a good experience. If you provide an onboarding experience which collects enough relevant information, your agent can operate much better.

Ask new users a few questions in chat and remember their answers for future conversations. For example, Job Scout asks about their background, the roles they’re interested in and where they could work.

Job Scout’s onboarding questions about job search goals, background, roles, pay, location and requirements.

Add your questions

Open your agent’s Manage page, choose Onboarding in the sidebar and click Add question.

An expanded onboarding question showing the question, memory label, suggested answers and who has access to the answer.

What would you like to ask?

Write the question the person will see in chat. For example, “Where would you like to work?” Ask for information that will help your agent do its job.

Remember the answer as

Give the answer a short label, such as “Preferred work location”. This tells the agent what the remembered information is about.

Suggested answers (optional)

Use Add choice to give people a few answers to choose from. They can always reply in chat. Leave this empty for an open question.

Who has access to this answer?

Choose which agents can use the remembered answer. The default is This agent and its current teammates, so its direct teammates can use that context too.

Save and try it

Use Move up and Move down to put the questions in the order you want, then click Save onboarding. Try the experience with someone new to your agent and see whether the answers give it enough context to help them.
